Nothing marks the start of summer more than the family or a group of friends piling into the car for a trip to the beach to swim, sunbathe, have a picnic and eat ice creams! If you love the sun and the water just as much as we do at Gold Coast Watersports, you need to be sun smart so your time on our gorgeous Gold Coast water ways is filled with fun and laughter rather than pain and suffering!
Remember the first bad case of sunburn you ever had as a child? Skin burnt so much it was lobster red, hot and so sore to touch. If you were even unluckier to have sun stroke as well, you would have experienced a blinding headache, high temperature, rapid heart beat, felt sick to the stomach and even vomited.
We recommend if you are spending any length of time in the harsh Australian sun to adopt the age old adage – slip, slop, slap. If you are not familiar with this popular sun protection campaign from the Cancer Council, it means that you slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat!
Wearing a shirt or rash vest protects your upper body from over exposure to the sun. These days you can get rash suits that cover chests, arms and legs and offer great sun protection for children. Other parts of your body that aren’t covered need a thorough application of sunscreen and don’t forget to keep reapplying every couple of hours, especially if you are in the water the whole time. Finally, wear a hat. The broader the brim the better to protect eyes, noses and lips.
At Gold Coast Watersports we encourage all our visitors, young or old to bring along sunscreen, a water bottle and a towel as we want you to enjoy the fun we have to offer all day and not have to sit out due to sunburn.
So remember, if you plan to have a big day on one of the beautiful Gold Coast beaches, be sun smart! The Australian sun’s UV radiation will certainly lead to a major dose of sunburn if you don’t slip, slop, slap and a major downer on your fun.
